Abstract

Social media is widely used by dentists to attract new patients and by patients to find the best professional for their needs. The research was conducted using the databases PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar with the following keywords: “ethics,” “social media,” and “dentistry.” About 41 articles were found, 6 of which were selected based on reading the abstracts, as well as the Dental Code of Ethics and the Consumer Law. Some authors argue that posting photos and videos, despite being regulated by the Code of Ethics and Consumer Law, may characterize dentistry as a commercial enterprise and exploit work through publication with a solely commercial purpose. Sharing images and videos about dental treatments on social media can be an effective marketing strategy, but it must be done responsibly and with respect for ethical and legal standards. It is important that dentists provide clear and accurate information about the procedures and treatments performed, as well as the risks and benefits involved, so that patients can make informed decisions about their oral health care.
